Which cabinets can be painted

Most solid timber, MDF and two-pack cabinet doors respray well. Melamine and laminate can also be painted with the right degreasing, keying and adhesion primer. Vinyl-wrapped or thermofoil doors are different: the wrap can lift or bubble, particularly near ovens and kettles, and those doors are sometimes better replaced than painted. Doors that have swollen from water damage need repair or replacement first, because paint can’t fix a warped panel. We’ll tell you honestly at the quote stage which category your kitchen falls into.

How a cabinet respray works, step by step

1. Doors and drawer fronts are numbered, removed and taken off site. Hardware is removed and kept together.
2. Every surface is degreased, because a kitchen leaves an invisible film of cooking grease that stops paint sticking.
3. Surfaces are sanded through grades, filled where needed and primed with an adhesion primer.
4. The doors are sprayed in a controlled space, coat by coat, and left to cure.
5. Cabinet frames and end panels are masked and finished in your kitchen.
6. Doors are refitted, hinges adjusted and hardware reinstalled.

Colour and finish choices

Satin or low-sheen finishes suit most kitchens because they wipe clean without looking plastic. Dark colours look striking but show dust and fingerprints more, and very white finishes show up any yellowing in the room’s lighting, so a sample door is worth seeing in your own kitchen before you commit. It’s also the cheapest moment to update handles and hinges, since the doors are already off. Looking after a sprayed finish

A cured two-pack finish is hard-wearing, but it keeps hardening for some time after we finish. Follow the paint manufacturer’s cure guidance before heavy use, clean with a mild detergent and a soft cloth, and avoid abrasive cleaners. Keep steam and direct heat from kettles and appliances away from the door faces.

What you need to do before we arrive

Clear the benchtops beside the cabinets and empty any cupboards you’d rather not have open to the room while the doors are off. Decide on new handles or hinges beforehand if you want them changed, and let us know about any doors that stick or drawers that don’t close properly so we can adjust them on refit. Expect the doors to be away for a few days, so it helps to plan how you’ll use the kitchen in the meantime.

Paint or replace?

Painting makes sense when the cabinet boxes are sound and the layout works for you, because you keep the joinery and change only the finish. If the carcasses are damaged, the layout no longer suits you or the doors are past repair, replacement is the better investment. We’d rather tell you that than paint something that won’t last.
