Choosing the right sheen for each surface

Sheen is the decision people tend to leave until the paint is already on the wall. Flat and matt finishes hide surface imperfections and suit ceilings and low-traffic rooms, but they mark easily and don’t scrub well. A low-sheen acrylic is the usual choice for living areas and bedrooms because it balances forgiveness with washability. Satin and semi-gloss belong on doors, architraves, skirtings, kitchens and bathrooms, where the harder film wipes clean without burnishing.

Outside, a low-sheen or satin exterior acrylic sheds dirt better than a flat one, while eaves and fascia usually take a lower sheen so they don’t draw the eye. Higher sheen also shows every ripple in the surface underneath, so on older plaster we lean lower and put the effort into preparation instead. Each quote names the sheen for every surface, so it can’t quietly change from room to room.

Testing colour in your own light

Colour cards are viewed under showroom lighting and printed at a small size, which is why a shade that looked calm in the shop can turn cool or heavy across a full wall. Ask for sample pots and paint two large patches, ideally on different walls. Look at them in the morning, the afternoon and at night with the lights on, and leave them up for a few days before deciding.

Interior and exterior: what changes on site

Inside, the priorities are dust control, protecting furniture and floors, and keeping the home liveable while the work runs. We move and cover furniture, mask fixtures and clean up daily.

Outside, the weather sets the program. Coatings need dry surfaces and suitable temperatures to cure, so exterior stages are planned around the forecast. The order matters too: wash-down and repairs first, then priming, then topcoats, working from the top of the building down. High walls, eaves and gutters need proper access equipment, which we sort out at the quote stage. An exterior repaint is also the chance to fix the small problems that let water in — cracked render, failed sealant, rusting fixings — because paint over an active leak won’t last.

What moves the price of a paint job

Price follows preparation and access far more than the number of litres. The main variables are the condition of the surfaces (how much patching, sanding and priming they need), the size and height of the areas, the number of coats and the product system, and how much has to be masked or moved. Two quotes that look far apart usually differ on preparation and coats, not the paint itself.
